Metropolitan fencing logic assumes the depot is an hour away. Mining and resources work breaks that assumption: the site is remote, mobilisation is expensive, and a shortfall discovered on arrival cannot be fixed by an afternoon truck run. Fencing for the resources sector is therefore a planning discipline first and a product second.

What remote sites fence

The requirements are broader than a construction perimeter:

  • Exclusion zones around active workings, blast areas, voids and rehabilitation ground
  • Plant and laydown compounds, where the 2400mm security line and site cameras protect high value equipment through long unattended periods
  • Camp and village boundaries, separating accommodation from operations
  • Environmental controls: silt fence on disturbed ground, and fauna exclusion where approvals require it, including koala fencing in the eastern states
  • Public interfaces, where a haul road crosses a public road or a tenement meets a travelling route, needing water barriers and delineation rather than mesh

The logistics rules

Mobilise once. The freight economics of remote work punish the second truck. The order that leaves the depot should carry the full requirement plus contingency: spare panels, extra feet and couplers, and the bracing for the wind the site will actually see. Ten percent contingency on a remote job is not padding, it is the difference between a gap in an exclusion zone and a plan that absorbed a bent panel.

Specify for the environment. Remote Australia is hard on equipment: unshielded wind, corrosive dust, vehicles everywhere. Galvanised, properly braced runs with generous ballast are the baseline. Sheeting decisions deserve double caution, a sail effect that is an inconvenience in a suburb is a flattened run on an exposed plain.

Plan the maintenance loop. Someone on site owns the perimeter walk, because the supplier cannot casually attend. Damage gets reported with photos, and replacement rides the next scheduled freight rather than a dedicated run.

Compliance does not thin with distance

Remote does not mean unregulated. WHS duties apply in full, mining safety regimes add their own layers, and environmental approval conditions, sediment, fauna, rehabilitation boundaries, are audited seriously. Camp infrastructure travels with the fence

The same mobilisation that carries the perimeter usually carries the site establishment: site sheds, shipping containers including dangerous goods storage, ablution blocks, waste tanks for non sewered ground, and water infrastructure. One coordinated load beats five, by exactly the cost of four remote freight runs.
