The 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games was the largest event Queensland has staged: eleven days of competition across a footprint of venues, villages, transport hubs and live sites, each needing its perimeter built, operated and struck on a schedule with zero float. For the temporary fencing industry, GC2018 was the stress test, and the TFH family of businesses, of which Rentafence is part, delivered the security fencing as the Games' official supplier, almost 22,000 metres of it.

What Games scale actually demands

The metre count understates the problem. What made GC2018 hard was structure:

  • Simultaneity. Venues built in parallel, not sequence. The fleet had to exist in full, not in rotation, thousands of panels committed at once while ordinary customers kept hiring.
  • Uniformity. Equipment moved between venues as areas changed function mid Games. Every panel had to couple with every other, one specification across the entire supply, the fleet property that comes from manufacturing in Brisbane.
  • Security function. Games fencing is part of the accreditation regime: perimeters that define who may be where, built to be patrolled and access controlled, closer to festival security design than to a construction boundary, at fifty times the scale.
  • The strike clock. Venues reverted to public and commercial use on published dates. Late removal was as visible a failure as late installation.

What it proved, and to whom

For event organisers, the Games answered the only question that matters about a fencing supplier: can the commitment survive contact with a fixed date at volume? Manufacturing depth, local fleet and repair capacity all got audited by reality at once, and the answer became the reference that every festival, carnival and civic event booking since has quietly relied on.

For the region, it was also a local story: a South East Queensland family business supplying the biggest event its home ever hosted, the same fleet appearing at the HOTA arts precinct and the grounds of the clubs the company sponsors.

The lessons that scale down

Your event is smaller than a Games; the physics is identical:

  1. Fixed dates need fleet depth behind them. Ask a supplier what else they are committed to on your weekend.
  2. Perimeters are systems, panels, gates, egress, patrol access, designed off the site plan, per the major event planning method.
  3. Strike is half the job. Book the exit window as firmly as the entry.
  4. Uniform equipment saves the day when the layout changes mid event, because it always changes.
