A site without a sewer connection still makes wastewater, every flush, every wash, every shower, and physics insists it all goes somewhere. The somewhere is a holding tank, and the system that empties it is a truck on a schedule. Two components, one design question: will capacity and cycle stay ahead of production?

The system

Waste tanks in 2200L and 4400L collect from the site's facilities: toilets, ablution blocks, wash stations. The tank is a buffer, its size buys time between services. The pump out service is the other half, running on a cycle set by headcount, fixture count and tank capacity.

Sizing without regret

The variables are mechanical: people times hours times fixtures. The failure patterns are human:

  1. Sized to average, sunk by peak. The pour day crew, the fit off fortnight, the audit week: the tank serves the maximum, not the mean.
  2. Showers forgotten. One shower produces more grey water than several toilets. Any site with shower facilities sizes on water use, not headcount.
  3. Every fixture counts. The wash down point plumbed in helpfully by someone in week three feeds the same tank nobody resized.

Placement is a servicing decision

The tank position that suits delivery day can starve the site later. The pump out truck needs hose reach on every visit, through the site as it will be, not as it was: after the materials arrive, after the laydown grows, after the rain. Remote and rural sites add the mud question, if the wet season cuts truck access, the tank needed to be bigger, or the pad needed building. The schedule is a living thing

Set at mobilisation, the cycle is right until the site changes, and sites always change. The discipline is one line in the site routine: headcount moved, call the supplier. A tank that overflows does not inconvenience the site, it closes the facilities, and a site without working toilets is legally and practically a site that stops.

Events on unsewered ground

Specifying the system
