There is a reliable field test for how a project is really run: ask to see the current drawings. On one kind of site, someone walks to the site shed and pulls the stamped set. On the other, someone excavates the passenger seat of a ute. Both projects have management; only one has a place to keep it.

The four returns on a shed

Supervision gets a venue. Inductions, toolbox talks, subbie coordination and the awkward conversations all need a door that closes. Sites above a handful of trades coordinate through the shed or coordinate badly.

Records survive the project. Permits, SWMS, dockets, the site diary: the paperwork that decides disputes and audits needs to be dry, current and findable in under a minute. Regulator visits are graded substantially on retrieval speed.

Welfare is provided, not improvised. A dry place to eat and shelter is part of what a workforce is owed, alongside the toilets and wash stations. Crews read the amenities as a statement of how the builder values them, because it is one.

Small valuables sleep indoors. Survey kit, power equipment and the first aid stock live behind a lock, inside the perimeter and camera system that guards the big stuff.

Sizing by peak, not by day one

  • 3.6m x 3m: supervisor plus paperwork, small crews
  • 4.8m and 6m x 3m: the standard bracket, office plus meeting space or crew room
  • 7.2m to 9m: split office and crew zones for bigger sites
  • 12m and 16m: full project offices for long, multi party jobs

The sizing error is always the same: specified for week one's org chart, overwhelmed by month three's coordination meeting and the first wet week with the whole crew sheltering at once. Hire for the busiest month.
