Ask what a site boundary is for and you get one of two answers: to be seen, or to stop something. Almost every traffic equipment mistake on Australian sites comes from giving a seen job to stop equipment, or worse, a stop job to seen equipment. Sorting the two is the entire discipline.

Seen: delineation equipment

Delineation communicates. Reflective traffic cones taper lanes and mark transitions, day and night. Arrow boards give instructions at reading distance. Mesh fencing marks the work area for pedestrians. All of it depends on a cooperating audience, which for the overwhelming majority of drivers and walkers is exactly what you have.

Stop: containment equipment

Containment resists. Water filled barriers are delivered empty, positioned, then filled, light to place, heavy in service. Interlocked into runs, they behave as a connected mass that resists and redirects rather than scatters. Where the boundary needs fence height as well as mass, mesh extensions and hoarding extensions build upward from the barrier base, one unit doing the work of a fence and an anchor at once.

The assignment test

Walk each boundary and ask what happens if it fails once:

  • A pedestrian steps past it into a materials laydown: seen is enough, mesh or barrier tape territory
  • A pedestrian steps past it into a live vehicle route: stop, water barrier between the flows
  • A car drifts into it at car park speed: stop, filled barriers, connected
  • A vehicle leaves a road into the work zone: stop, engineered, the ricochet conversation and a traffic management plan
  • A driver misses the message entirely: the failure was seen equipment missing upstream, cones and boards before the barrier, never instead of it

Sequencing: the part that makes it work

Drivers meet the setup in order, and the order is the design: instruction first (arrow board), then guidance (cone taper), then the hard edge (barrier run). Each element earns the next. A barrier without warning is an impact; a taper without a barrier is a suggestion; the full sequence is a system that works at night, in rain, with a tired driver, which is the standard that matters.

Pedestrians get the same rigour

The diverted footpath beside a work zone is the most litigated stretch of any site. It needs continuity (no gaps where the route just ends), mass on the traffic side (filled barriers, not bunting), width for prams and wheelchairs, and light.
