Roadside work runs on a bet: that passing drivers will read the cones and act accordingly. It is a good bet, drivers overwhelmingly comply. But at certain speeds, durations and distances, the residual risk of the driver who does not becomes unacceptable, and the job crosses a line from delineation to containment. Recognising that line is what this article is about.

What a ricochet barrier is

The ricochet barrier system, including the longitudinal barrier, is a modular hard barrier deployed as a continuous connected run along a work zone edge. Connection is the engineering: joined segments respond to impact as one long mass, absorbing energy and redirecting an errant vehicle along the line instead of admitting it. The faces are high visibility, so the run delineates while it contains, and access openings and end treatments are designed details rather than gaps.

The four factor assessment

Whether a job warrants containment is formally a traffic management plan decision, made under state road authority schemes by accredited planners. The factors they weigh are worth every site manager knowing:

  1. Speed. The energy of a drift rises with the square of speed. A 40 zone forgives; a 90 zone does not.
  2. Exposure time. An hour of mobile work accumulates little risk; a crew beside a live lane for three months accumulates a lot. Duration pushes jobs toward barrier.
  3. Offset. Work hard against the lane edge has no recovery room. Work set back behind a wide shoulder may not need containment at all.
  4. Consequence. People and occupied plant behind the line argue for barrier; a stockpile argues less.

High speed plus long duration plus zero offset plus workers present is not a judgement call, it is a barrier job.

Containment does not replace the sequence

A hard barrier is the last element a driver meets, never the first. Upstream, the standard grammar still applies: arrow boards instructing, cone tapers guiding, then the barrier holding the edge. The pedestrian corollary

The same errant vehicle threatens the diverted footpath. Where a pedestrian route runs beside live traffic, water filled barriers put mass between path and lane, with extensions adding height where needed. A work zone that barriers its workers and bunts its pedestrians has half a system.
